While I was just writing a piece about how I use my Katana in my GNU/Linux environment, Boss comes with a surprising firmware update (a real V2.0 update!). Couldn't pass it, lots of interesting new options.
For example, I'm very happy with the IR (Impulse Response) microphone options that I got now. Now to give a certain sonic shape to my guitar tone I use physical mics (I use a budget but good Ribbon, and SM57 clone which I like clicks better than the original Shure).
Only gives the problem that in my home studio, with quite a few neighbors, I have to put the amplifier on a decent volume. With the IR microphones I can use my studio completely silently with the built-in USB audio output of the Katana. I haven't played with it enough yet, but it sounds very promising.
Plus a few other updates that I didn't expect in the few years I've owned the thing now. Wow ... a Centaur clone, pedal bend, second equalizer ... feels like Christmas .
Unfortunately, the Boss Tone Studio software doesn't work on Linux, but there is an alternative that works very well (maybe even slightly better). The alternative is called FXFloorBoard, you can run the edit guitar settings in real time.
FXFloorboard still works (as far as I've tested) with the new firmware, but hasn't implemented the new features yet. Working on it according to the developer (gumtownbassman).
So the big article about the Boss Katana 100 MKII in my GNU/Linux setup will have to wait a little longer. Device is an important part of my entire studio.
The firmware can be found here . The GNU/Linux kernel has built-in drivers for the Boss Katana amplifiers as of version 5.4.
